On Approaching 50

Come, vile Life, turn in on me,
I have no more to offer;
Torch my remains upon the sea
In my now empty coffer.

Author Explanation: life is so tightly constrained, like a whale-bone corset, I cannot breath.

Hmmm, seems a bit desperate. I know I have my bad days but at 48 its great. (As long as you don't listen to the news, worry about work, watch the soaps, watch your favourite celebrities wrinkle into their sixties or seventies, or think about lack of money)
This poem gave an older feel an 'end of life' poem. A 'take me, I'm ready' poem. A 'life? why bother?' poem.
Well written into a neat parcel that says so much, so deeply, so emotionally with very few words. This is a 'grower' which is, the more you read it, the more you see. This is real poetry and unlike the poems sentiments, you have plenty to offer.
Excellent poem (but I don't like the title indicating '50')
Ian

Hmmm... my half millennium not too many months off.
Cheery Yikes

It successfully asks the question.
But, I think points more to attitute than age.

Firecat,
Only 50!
I'm 66 and am starting a new life in May.
Your just a youngster.
Cheere up, get yourself a Toy Boy.
Life is what you make it.
Age is just a number.

I don't think there is much chance of your coffer being empty when you can dip in for little gems like this. Disco ball
Chin (or is it chins, no offence intended Laughing Laughing Laughing) up my dear and stay graceful. Rose KRC (46yo). Cheers

I don't like the attitude much, maybe because I'm also 49, but I do admire the poem as poetry.

But Cadwallon, nearly 500?!!

Yep, the first couple of hundred years are the worst. By the time you get to 500, you need really big cakes for all the candles.

I wouldn't fancy being that wrinkled, FC. I think I'll stick with my Pete Townsend motto, hope I die before I get old. Laughing

I don't know Firecat. I feel I must respond to the impulse behind the poem, as well as the poem itself. It wouldn't have mattered a jot to me, back when I was twenty-three. But now, I feel as if you're driving nails into the coffin, in my neighborhood! I am just on the cusp of turning 50 myself (notice how trim Cad's writing is for someone over 500) and so, must say that, the 40's were absolutely astounding compared to everything that came before, so, what have I to hope from the 50's? The mind boggles! So, whatever age, it is steering, and where you're exploring that matters, not so much what you've got to drive in...
Well! That was a thought provoking poem. I mean after all, you're writing poetry. You mustn't be dead yet. Twisted Evil

Andmymare

Ah ha Firecat.....see how niftily you got us all to reveal our ages...(me just 48 on 24.2.06) So just had a birthday and with a new man and a new address (new county altogether!) and a new village to live in where the locals wont believe I am over 40 anyway..(nice people here!)I feel like a 20 year old..just a bit wiser. Anyway Sarah - who made the long journey north to join in my birthday celebrations . tells me that 50 is the new 30. Smile So Celebrate and enjoy.

Anyway Old age is an achievement..a gold medal performance to be rewarded but you aren't old enough yet to get the lifetime achievement award...although Cad might be Shocked

I know exactly what you mean, about life being a bit like a whalebone corset. What an excellent, telling analogy.

Powerful writing.

Thanks, Luby.
So many people seem to be able to do as they want, and the world doesn't stop...
Maybe I'm missing some grand point?
I just don't know. Sad

Thank you Bee; I was very, very low when I wrote this. I had just had 'flu and had thought: "do I want to get better?" - and I didn't!
Spring is round the corner here, that gives me such a lift, I want to live again!
I hope things are better for you now. Life can be such a bitch!
I do appreciate your interest.
Take Care,
