The Ant

Outline: What do we learn from the birds and bees?
From the Ant’s point of view I am irrelevant.
I am not part of his food chain
But merely a hazard
Like any other random act of nature.

And yet the Ant is part of my culture.
He is held up as an example
Of organization and perseverence
In the great books of our civilization.

Am I impressed by this icon of industry?
And do I follow his example?
Sometimes I tread on him
Or douse his swarming family with hot water.

And thanks to industry and perseverance
I sometimes manage
To clear my dwelling place
Of his unwanted presence.

And I have to chant:

"Dead and, dead ant, dead ant, deadant, dedant, de-dant, dead-aaaaaaaaaaaaaaant!"

(To the Pink Panther tune). Twisted Evil

Anony,

This made me laugh! Maybe it wasn't meant to put I had a picture of you scalding the wee feckers and jumping up and down on the poor wee beggars. Hate them myself but I do remember watching an army of them carry something, God knows what, and it was quite fascinating (and I was bored at the time, lying on the grass and whatever).

That said, it is true about their determination and peserverence. If only humans could be more like ants. (Live ones, that is).

Lovely wee thought piece. Thanks for making me laugh this early hour.

What hilarious responses! Thanks to Ian for his "Visual-Anties", to Jen for her "Deadantic Fanfare" (when on earth do you ever sleep?) and to Maipenrai for the grim threat of a visitation from the FART forces!!!

I am very afraid! Peace

Can't add much now, can I? But did enjoy this. Could be read as straightforward prose also. Still, my sympathy has to lie with the ants. They are wonderful, fascinating creatures, seems awful anyone should want to destroy them... just such a pity they bite!

Nah, not for me, mate. It's been a long time since I read anything on here that bored me so much.

Dulll, dull, dull.

Reads like it was written for the sake of writing. Okay, so maybe that's a good enough excuse, but not always.

Thanks, Carrieanne - glad you like the Ant. Thanks, too, Weaver, for dropping by. I don't think I had the honour of a review from you before. I appreciate your honesty.....I think.

I wouldn't worry about our mate Weaver. He's just being pedantic.

*Pause for applause, and when none is forthcoming, plough on regardless.*

I enjoyed reading this. Holding up ants as an example to us all, and yet using their industry to

Quote:
sometimes manage
To clear my dwelling place
Of his unwanted presence.

made me laugh at the irony of it all. A lovely little bit of whimsy, cheers for that, Anony.

I anticipated a remark like that!

In all fairness, I should apologise for that review. Not because I didn't say what I thought, but because I usually try to be more constructive than that.

It's not that I don't appreciate the subject - it's the form that leaves me cold. I guess I have issues with free poetry, but I reckon the subject would've been served better by a little more form. Still, since mine seems to be the lone voice in the wilderness, I wouldn't worry about it too much!

Thanks, Andrew Ant, for your kind comments, when I was feeling a little crestfallen - or doused, as it were!
Ah, Weaver! If you want form, I can do form! Do you like this version any better?

The Ant cares nothing for me
I have nothing he can eat
I’m just another hazard
With enormous stamping feet!

Yet the Ant is my role model
At times held up to me
As a very good example
Of the way that I should be,

The way I should get organised
And work my goals to reach
And all I do is step on him
And cover him with bleach!

Indeed I do work very hard
To most specific ends:
To rid my house by any means
Of his family and friends.

A great poem about the illusions of ego and culture -
Really enjoyed the altered perception of this one.
Cheers
