Roadworks - Roo

I'm driving a road-train, one hundred feet long
And I'm pushing much harder than planned
I've got mail for the people who live down in Perth
I deliver on time, or I'm damned.

A truckdriver's life is a difficult one,
He's despised as a road hogging cheat
He must break the speed limits, wherever he can
And be hounded and run off his feet.

Road Transport, Police, and the Special Task Force
All insist there's a job to be done
They go right through my log book, they're cynics and hard
They make all drivers' wages hard won.

The Main Roads department close off half a road
While the graders and rollers go slow
And the truck driver waits in frustration and heat
For the man to change "Stop", into "Go".

The sign slowly changes, the caravan moves
And the road train rolls doggedly on
It has cost twenty minutes, this roadworks delay
But without it there'd be nothing done.

So I'm driving a road-train, I'm pushing it hard
And I'm glad I've got cleanskins** all round
And I hope there's no roadworks ahead of me now
I'm on schedule again, westward bound.

** Cleanskins are tyres which have not been recapped, or retreaded

Enjoyable journey along rich coloured dusty roads. This fairly skips along. You have delivered. Your poetry always holds something different. This produces good images, and a feel of the frantic, as the driver claws back twenty minutes.

Excellent.

Oooh this is so true. Road workers would have to be the slowest workers on earth. As for truckdrivers, never mind, I'll keep my thoughts to myself Laughing . Another great poem, full of rightful images. Enjoyed the read. cheers, scarlet

Thanks for commenting Scarlet, and I know what you mean. Some of our council workers are so slow it would take them 2 hours to watch 60 minutes! And all truck drivers are the same. 'Cept some are different.

My "number 2" son is a Heavy Goods/Public Service vehicle driver, so I can empathise with this poem.

He would certainly understand your comment about avoiding "re-treads". Modern Tyres start out boned down to the bare minimum to avoid cost and reduce "unsprung weight" so then they go and chisel a bit more rubber off an already not so generously thick tyre.

A good point well made,

Brian

Hi Brian,
Yes, it's easy to be critical of the police, road workers, anyone really, until you try to put yourself in their position. Australian roads are generally not good, because we have such a vast area and a small tax base. I wear a kidney belt when I drive to remote areas because the roads are really rough. Thank you for the pointer to "Petty Minded". Will read straight away.
