Petty Minded

Outline: A tribute to Tom Petty very much WIP
Why: To express an indebtedness
Review: any
PETTY MINDED.

A latterday Hyperion, who
Filled a newly emptied stage,
Where Byrds had Country Rocked then flew,
To escape what had become a cage

Tom's still learning to fly without wings
Landing, will be the hardest of things

Thirty years later he's still rocking
On stage with him is my youthful dream
Kept alive by music he's playing
Petty and me, an unbeatable team.

We're both learning to fly without wings
Landing, will be the saddest of things

Hi Brian,

I suppose we all have to land sometime, but the fantasy still lives in the memory. A poem from the heart, thanks for sharing. cheers, scarlet

Super concept that - landing after a flight without wings, hard for sure, but not just sad, tragic. This work, and those lines in particular, goes to show the extent of your admiration for the artist in question. Liked it.

Thank you for your time and comments.

Scarlet-you're spot on.

CA-I'm delighted by your response

MP-As long as it stays Heartbreaker rather than Heartbroken.

Brian

(Hyperion was the last of the old gods. He still performed his role namely to use his chariot to tow the Sun across the Sky. All the others had been overthrown and watched Hyperion from the safety of a secluded and forgotten valley. Hyperion was their only hope. See Keat's "Fall of Hyperion")

Brian, love the chorus

Quote:
Tom's still learning to fly without wings
Landing, will be the hardest of things

We're both learning to fly without wings
Landing, will be the saddest of things

Kind of says it all... both simply and succinctly. It's refreshing to read a poem where the author whats you to both think and understand. Some people write for themselves. You don't, and I commend you for it. More power to you, Brian. Keep on rocking.

I'm afraid I have never been a big Petty fan (although I am big).
The poem is far from petty. I'd better check out his music. I can identify where you are coming from.

Good one.

It's "saddo time" for yours is my 1000th review. So thanks very much.

Petty loved the Byrds as I do and so he really is the longest running "tribute band" and for that I'm grateful to him.

McGuinn heard this track being played in his agent's office. He asked his agent when did i release that, I can't even remember writing it. You did neither was the reply the song was written and performed by Tom Petty. Surprisingly McGuinn has now recorded the song, "American Girl" and reckoned that it would have been one of the Byrds Greatest Hits.

Hi Brian,
I'm a Byrds fan from way back. I remember McGuinn with his octagonal glasses which started a fashion trend. And Tom Petty has not enjoyed the popularity his talent deserves, in my humble opinion. He is such a gifted musician.

You have presented the image so well, I'm sitting here remembering the music of the Byrds and Tom Petty! I suppose that is exactly what you intended to do. Your images are indeed evocative. Thank you for sharing this Brian.

Had to read this as I did not know of the conection with Tom Petty and The Byrds.
I loved the words, and I loved the pattern of the poetry. It read as a tribute, so even if I had not known that I would have 'got it.'
Good stuff.
