Many a drunken time was spent,
At the 76 club in Burton on Trent.
In the haze of smoke and the mist of sweat.
Headbangrockin' to a groups live set.

Packed tight and intimate with each rockin' band
That played their music so loud, proud and grand
From AC-DC to Medicine Head,
Pied Piper's of rock, we were easily led.

Leaving the night with ears ringing.
Smoke kippered, beer covered, clothing clinging.
Taking the exit and hitting fresh air.
Blood pump, head throb, you had to be there.

Those were the days my friend. The poem brought back so many happy memories.

In 1962 the Conservative club at Watham Cross became the "Impala Club" each Wednesday.

Because of a row between the US and UK Musicians' Unions visiting American singers could not bring their backing band.

So they would meet up with the UK substitute and play together for the first time before going on the road.

(This conflict led to Tin Pan Alley pushing groups because groups were beyond the embargo.)

The Impala "House Bands" included Billy Fury and the Blue Flames (Georgie Fame on key boards), Peter Jay and the Jaywalkers, and several other minor groups.

The highlight for me was seeing Little Richard. The rest of the visitors have been forgotten with exception of Bruce Channelle (Hey Baby) who was absolutely fabulous.

Just imagine seeing top stars in a church hall type venue and for the princely sum of 20p

Brian

Unfortunately, unlike the others, I was still a bit too young back in 76 to appreciate this fully. But it does makes me a little envious as to what I've missed. Geat last verse. Would be tempted to replace the and in the pied piper's line to a comma.

Cheers Brian- I always regret not seeing more bands than I did but those I saw are treasured memories. As a piece of trivia the Sex Pistols appeared at the 76 club and if you check out E-Bay there is a live album from there. Of course the Sex Pistols weren't my thing at that time so I refused to go.
Cheers Kashers- Of course the Pub crawl was a big part of the night before the eventual Crescendo of music. I never saw any trouble but then I was probably too drunk.
Cheers Carrieann- Inbetween the Pub crawl and the 76 club we used to spend time at Eves Discotheque to watch the handbag worshippers dance in a circle. A mysterious ritual of ladies. Did you worship your handbag at night??

Thankyou all

Ian

I think I was into handbag worshipping for a short while, Ian - sometime between 82 & 84. Bit hazy my memories from those days tho' and the worshipping must've been quite half-hearted, seem to recall waking up having lost a fair few items they contained too Very Happy
