The Reef

Outline: Memories of the Red Sea
Review: Any and all comments welcome.
The Reef

The sound of muffled thunder
and the gurgling exhale of my demand valve
as ten-foot roller sweeps majestically ashore
above my head
carrying ten thousand fish in playful spin

and I, as observer, observe with a keen eye
a 300lb wrasse staring at me.

He winks a hello then goes on his way.

(photo Genevieve Johnson)

Two white-tipped reef sharks sleek as missiles
glide close by effortlessly
and at first sight feel deadly.

But then white tips paint them friendlies
compared to one thousand barracuda -
sleeker still than shark -
patrolling their fertile hunting ground
causing I, along with buddy, to hold our breath
in fear and wonder.

The coral cliff -
one half alive
built upon the bones
of the other half dead now
for God knows how long -
bathes in sunlight
even at a hundred feet down

and clown fish
parrot
angel
and
anemone

paint rainbows in the deep

while life on The Reef

sleeps with one eye open

hiding from a predator.

For when the nighttime falls
and crayfish and the lobster march
and hunger calls to those who stalk the dark
a stark reality unfolds
for those with eyes and torch to see it happen.

All of what was thought to be half asleep
is pitched against each other
in the race to eat

and darting things so fast the eye can hardly catch
dart out from little holes to snatch their catch
then dart back home
for everything is feeding
in the moonlight.

Author Explanation: Genevieve Johnson photo above was found on the Internet, as were the rest, as I have no photographic record of my own dives in the Saudi Red Sea in the 80s.

Wow Ron!

This is brilliant! A trip through the deep that I will never make with a narration that makes it real and exciting.

Thank you. . .this is very special,

Immersed myself in the images, both written and shown.
Enjoyable and relaxing. Your enthusiasm and excitement shines through.
I feel refreshed and will no doubt return for another glimpse.

Good 'un

Hi Ron

What amazing words and pictures.
Makes me think that one day I might like to try diving.

(Just interested to know is the Wrasse the big fella in the first picture?)

Hi Ian,

Glad I could take you there. I feel so lucky for being given the opportunity to spend any/all weekends camped on the beach on the Red Sea. Thanks for dropping by.

..........

Hi Phil,

Yeah, the big fella is the wrasse - they are a rare sight, and an amazing one too. Cool Glad you enjoyed this, too.

Thanks, both,

Cheers

So when you shut your eyes, none of it is replayed on the eye lids then...

Enjoyed the read, and the images..get your self a marine tank then can stick your head in the tank sort of bring back the memories...

Cheers, G, glad you enjoyed Cool how's the Tees Valley poetry scene these post-Kenaz days?

Bob, Doh why didn't I think of that? Danny has a fish tank, and with a magnifying mask I'd be back there. Cool Laughing

I have a musical mp3 recital of this but can't find the upload option any more - have uploads been scrapped?

Anyway, glad the words/images took you both there.

Cheers

Very impressive, the words and the pictures. It's amazing how the sea creatures swim deep into the ocean at high tide, except to those who leave it too late Sad . I thoroughly enjoyed the read and seeing the pics. Great stuff. Excellent. cheers, scarlet

Thanks, scarlet, always nice to see your crits - especially when I've penned something you like. Much appreciated. Very Happy If you click the speaker icon at top-right of page you can hear the soundtrack of it - Paul and I were so pleased with the outcome we're gonna stick this one on the album too, and, oh, yeah, it got published yesterday in the Peterborough Evening Telegraph, so, with all the comments I've received from here and in the flash group, where it was written in 4 flashes, and Paul's reaction to it and now publication too, I'm well chuffed that Cul put up the prompts that inspired it. It's been a good week poetically/musically. Cool

Cheers

Congratulations to all that you've achieved. I just listened to the recording, and the film clip was amazing. I felt as though I was in the deep blue ocean. This whole arrangement raised goose-bumps on my skin. Excellent work. cheers, scarlet

Hi Ron,

I just finished listening to your recording. The words and music are timeless. The music is absolutely fantastic, and loved the song 'Lord Franklin'. Gosh, all of the words overwhelmed me, such great writtings. And, the two instrumentals of 'Sandcastles' is brilliant. How proud you must feel with the outcome. I feel proud for you and Paul. Such excellence. An exceptional job well done. Congratulations once again. cheers, scarlet

Yeah, 'Lord Franklin' is a corker, hey, but I can't take all the credit for that one as it's a 'Traditional' English folk song. It's one of Dez's favourites and I simply switched the mic' on as he played it sat on my settee, sent the guitar/vocals to Paul, and that was the outcome. And, wow, yeah, 'Sandcastles' - Paul blows me away when he gets his Roland keyboard out. He just thinks about it for a moment - then makes something up off the top of his head. He's a musical Wizard Wink Glad you enjoyed. Cool

Cheers
