Pleasure Palace.

Memories are hungry and memories taste sweet.
Apprehension brought the smile while skipping through the street.
The pleasure palace windows shone and lit my eyes with joy.
For colours rich with treasured dreams would hold this little boy.
With gaping mouth and sloppy tongue and little red clenched hand
To venture forth through tinkly bell and make good my demand.
But what a place, so lost for words, but then it's not surprising.
With bags and jars and chocolate bars, all so hypnotizing
A booming voice, so bright, so sharp, "I haven't got all day.
Just decide on what you want and then be on your way"
But little boys can't rush to choose in such a wasteful manner.
You have to take your time, you see, when you've only got a tanner.
It takes a lot of thought and ponder to make that final pick
The optimum of sweets and chocs to leave you feeling sick.
Sixpence brought me such a lot of goodies way back then
A wonder I still have all my teeth.
I'd better check again.

I really enjoy this poem as it brought back memories of the "Boiled Sweets" Shop at the Southern end of Seven Sisters Road, Tottenham.

They made the sweets they sold and you could see them being made. In addition to a wide range of boiled sweets they also made Sticks of Rock, Gob-Stoppers etc.

Best of all was the 1d bags of "chippings", "Mis-shapes" and bits of broken rock.

The smell outside the shop was hypnotic but inside, it was almost suffocating.

Brian

A slice of nostalgia, and a good one. Could picture this (even if it was before my time, hehe)

Ah... The memories... Perfectly orgazmic. My mouth is salivating just thinking about them. Love it.

I wasn't too sure where this was headed in the very beginning Embarassed , but, you rescued me from that thought lol. Not sure what a tanner is. What a delicious memory and so well expressed. I know what'll be on my shopping list today lol. An excellent piece of nostalgia. Good stuff. cheers, scarlet

Lemon drops in glass jars
and boxes of clove balls
Fry's Five Boys chocolate bars
and ices from Old Walls
all placed in a brown bag with
handles of string...

...these are a few of my favourite things, lol

Aye, a good little reminiscent write. Do you think that was a standard line from the shopkeepers, hehe?

Does wonder how we managed to keep our teeth, especially when we never had plaque removal mouthwash, ultra-whitening toothpaste, etc, etc.

Good one, Ian.

Scarlet.
Here's your glossary of terms...

A 'tanner' was a sixpenny piece in 'old money' before we went decimal back in the early 1970's. We used to have halfpennies, pennies, threepenny bits, sixpence (tanners)
shillings (one bob-twelve pence) florins (two bob-two shillings) half crowns (two shillings and sixpence).
Crowns (five shillings) and Guineas (twenty one shillings) were also legal tender but quite scarce, they were mostly commemorative.
We also had a ten bob note (ten shillings) and a pound note (now we have coins).
Years ago we also had a 'groat' (fourpenny piece).

Hope this helps in the translation.

Oh, yes, Ian - Halcyon Pocket Money Days and, oh, most definitely yes yes yes, a boy had to take his time and choose wisely - because comics also needed to be purchased. Cool

Loved this - reminded me of Richard Digance and his 'Spangles Song' - as I call it - where he lists all the very important 'little things' from the 50s/60s that we miss so much now.

An excellent trip down memory lane, thanks.

Cheers

Oh Ian!

You have taken me back to days long forgotton, when, as you say, spending a tanner was a lengthy process, for girls, as well as boys.

Your words flow beautifully and bring back such special memories,

Thank you,

Pamx Very Happy

A bloke at work brought in some bazooka joe bubble gum and it took me down memory lane. That must have been the trigger of thought.
Cheers Brian- A penny was substantial, a thre'penny bit was the world, a tanner was a dream. All required a long time to exchange for goodies. It was a mission.
Cheers- Before your time!! You make me feel so old Sad . I bet you've had a penny lucky bag in your time, surely!
Cheers Chris- Orgazmic is a good word for the pleasure. The time of real money and a full pocket of ha'penny's.
Cheers Scarlet- Embarassed Not the Pleasure Palace you thought. Embarassed
Cheers Inker- You must have been in the same shop. Swap you my Opal Fruits for your Spangles.
Cheers Ron- Still got to check out the 'spangles song' I'll do it today 'cause I'm not going out of the house again in this wind.
Cheers Pam- Fruit Salad or Black Jacks? Both for me, as many as I can fit in my mouth. Laughing
Cheers metman- Glad you liked it. Have a Trebor Mint.

Thankyou for the excellent response. I'm glad it brought back memories of sticky pockets, sherbet finger and furry teeth. Make sure you brush before bed. Still, the Tooth Fairy can feed your addiction.

I've just found a half sucked sherbet lemon in my hanky so I'm off to finish it. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Thanks all.

Ian

Enjoyed this - a few wee niggles with slightly poetic language which jarred a little 'for' (- who starts sentences like that these days? 'for I must catch the bus' etc)
Otherwise a great wee piece of nostalgia

Cheers Bernie.

Cheers Ron for the link.

Surprised how many have looked at this. Is it because we are all children at heart or is it because a different pleasure palace was expected. Shocked

Cheers all.
