The Dodo Swings (And Flies With Jug).

Outline: For Michael 'Dodo' Marmarosa... Musician.
Why: fun
Review: any
THE DODO SWINGS (AND FLIES WITH JUG).

As The Jug flies
The Dodo keeps his beat on reality
grounding a swirling swinging groove
in hypnotic bursts of melodic triplets
chords making no sense
until resolved
bringing into hints of standards
both remember from past lives

It is early Sunday morning
and my view is of butterflies
playing dangerous games
with three cats
in the long grass
while my lover dozes
after a light breakfast
upstairs...

The Jug flies while the Dodo swings
sinuously insinuating himself
into the closed minds
of the times
but The Yardbird he knew...
'Dodo is a bitch' said 'Bird
in the parlance of the times
while sipping a little juice
on 52nd Street...

One thing I know...
He surely weren't talking 'bout no dog.

Author Explanation: Just love the guy's work I guess ? There's so little recorded compared to others with less ability. Sad. The 'poem'? 'bop's' along if you let it... Well it does in my head, anyway. 'Jug' is Gene Ammons and 'Bird' or 'Yardbird' to give him his full monicker, is Charlie Parker.

This is obviously a very personal poem and perhaps captures a moment in your life?

Though I know some of Charlie Parker's work, I don't know the other two.

Perhaps Verse 2 could either open the poem or be scrapped as it intrudes between Verse 1 and 3 and lessens their impact.

Perhaps not.

Hi Chris,
I like the way the 2nd verse breaks in between 1 & 3, it personalises the moment and puts it in to context, oh those lazy days of summer eh!
Cheers
Grant

Bri'. No, it is not a 'personal' poem. It is a snapshot in words of about 9.30 one Sunday morning after I'd eaten breakfast and while I was listening to Dodo Marmarosa and Gene Ammons, and that is all. It could equally have been about Louis Armstrong or The Grateful Dead but I didn't have them on the deck at the time.

Thanx Grant, You got it.
