Almost Their Waterloo

Outline: Liverpool 5-2 Havant and Waterlooville - the scoreline does not reflect the intensity of the match.
Review: Any and all comments welcome.
Almost Their Waterloo

“Can we play can we play can we play
Can we play can we play can we play, hey
Can we play can we play can we play
Can we play can we play you every week, hey?”

Sang the fans of Havant and Waterlooville
Which isn’t an easy name to rhyme
But twice before half time
The Kop were silenced and became still
Their Waterloo could have been that day
When amateurs showed them the way to goal
And scored enough for big bankroll
When Gate is added up
But best of all was magic ball play
On that most magnificent Hampshire Day
When eleven brave men in a lion's den
Earned the respect of their peers
And cheers of praise from the Anfield Kop
Who stopped behind instead of heading home
Will be remembered for many a year
When in the southern pubs they share
The story of the day that they were there.

Suppose arsenal smell arsenal smell, is a lot easier on the tongue, but Waterlooville, the Kop will kill..springs to mind...

Not a football fan myself but did enjoy taunting a Gunners fan recently..enjoyed the read Ron

Top notch topical Ron. I used to live in Havant so you know who I was rooting for!

Hi Ron
This was such a good write that I went off to read the match report. Sounds like a real sporting event to remember. Thanks for the read - shame I couldn't get the sound to work.

Most exciting match since the World Cup as far as I'm concerned - those bricklayers and teachers and fork lift truck drivers almost beat Liverpool. They were magnificent. Cool

Thanks for nice compliments, MP. Wink

Hey Ron,

Just watched the hilights myself - taped them as I wasn't ableta watch last night and from what I saw it was a great game. I'm always rooting for the underdogs in a game like that - great ta watch.

Anyone remember (not that I reaaally do) Lawrie Sanchez's Wycombe against Liverpool in the FA Cup semi finals in 1999?

Can't quite agree with you there. I can give you three better results.

Northern Ireland 3 - 2 Spain
Northern Ireland 2 - 1 Sweden
Northern Ireland 2 - 1 Denmark.

Stop off at Windsor for a big Wednesday night game sometime Ron - who needs Wembley huh? Laughing

Not even Wembley can capture intact and whole the Spirit of Football that one feels when at Anfield, Tim. Don't know what exactly that it is about the place, but there seems to be an aura about a full Anfield that is different to other grounds. In Liverpool, football is a second religion to Scousers so it's akin to a temple experience, I guess.

Hi Ron,
I am a football fan and I love the FA cup, it's that time of year when amazing things happen, what a fantastic performance by Havant & Waterlooville as your excellent poem summed up very well.
Cheers

Aye, I'd say that's true Ron. I've never actually been to Anfield myself, must have been a class experience to be in the cop. What games were ye there for? A European Cup night woulda been a good one.

Hopefully I'll get there some day.

Hi Grant, very pleased to meet you Very Happy

Thanks for dropping by; glad you liked this flash that I just rattled off. Some things flow.

Aye, the FA CUP is something altogether unique, hey. Did you see the team holding up that big white banner to the Kop after the match, with the words 'PROBABLY THE BEST PUB TEAM IN THE WORLD' written on it. Laughing Laughing Laughing Summed up the spirit of the occasion. Cool

.........

Tim,

Only been in the Kop once - I'm a Boro fan - but went to cheer on 'pool against Leeds in the 1/4 Final of FA Cup in 1973. I wrote this with JAM about that day.

.......

Thanks, both, appreciated. Today, it got published on Football Poets. Cool Cool Cool

Cheers
