Marlboro' Country.

Outline: An ethical question for Her Maj' ? (To be read at 'rap' speed).
Why: fun
Review: any
MARLBORO' COUNTRY.

So The Queen came down
came to our town
armed Special Branch
walk round and around
can't go here...
can't go there...
but if you plant a few trees
that makes it all fair ?

Crematorium chimneys
built out of sight
smoke signal spirals
into the night
beagles smoke Marlboro'
rats use shampoo
pharmaceutical giants
legitimate too.

Billions spent
on pills and powder
protesters voices
getting much louder
placards baiting
the flag waving throng
pictures in the paper...
right or wrong ?

When black smoke spirals
into the night
a visit by The Queen
will make it all right
Her Majesty comes...
Her Majesty goes...
lethal injection
or overdose
It's animal rights
or human voices ?
knighthoods beckon
so no more choices...

If corgi's don't smoke
but beagles do ?
The Queen should hold
the match for you
Photographers snap
at photo' calls
but you won't see that picture
on anyone's wall
environment's clean
and sterile too
while protesters ask why
rats need shampoo ?
screaming abuse
soon has to stop
when baton charged down
by a heavyweight cop
but hypocrisy rules
and is beyond a joke
when beagles smoke Marlboro...'
but corgi's don't smoke.

Author Explanation: The Queen opened Glaxo... known locally as 'Auschwitz on the A1'. This was my take on it, and yes, I was there protesting...

They do if thy cock their legs up against the wrong lamppost.....but they don't if you micro-wave them Wink

Yes another good one, there are certain things like shampoos and that that could just as easily be tested on humans...or sub-human politicians that allow these practises to go on, when the end product is vanity should be tested on humans...

I remeber the occaision and the protest and as we all know, it's still there, the big building at the end of GWR.
Good one

'lo Chris,

chalks up on the wall, "Tim was here", I'm exhausted tonight and can't really find a reasonably coherent response, lol. This is justa note of appreciation really. I concur with the sentiment and indeed with Logicus' comments. Enjoyed the read.

underlines the message and sidles slowly out,

Tim

A nice rhythm to the poem, and I understand and largely agree with the sentiment ~ but is it Her Maj or the politicians that should be held to account? I used to think she should consider withholding the Royal Assent from some particularly onerous, unpopular and unvoted for legislation; but the last Monarch to interfere in Parliament lost his head for doing so!

Hi Chris

If I'm not mistaken you live in Stevenage.
I used to work next door to Glaxo (at the long since defunct DTI Research Laboratory).

When I used to cycle in to work I would occasionally pass animal rights protestors outside the main gates (late 80s/early 90s this).
Our building was flattened to make way for a new Glaxo factory I believe.
All in the name of smoking beagles then.

Interesting read though.

Cheers

Phil

Thank you Logi', Grant and Tim for the kind words.
Firecat, I wish I could have seen a picture of our 'animal loving' monarch lighting up one of the animals cigarettes in the lab... I personally think they should experiment on humans if they are testing new stuff 'cos they know the human body's tolerance to most things so they should pay people to experiment on them and take the consequences when they screw up.
P.G.K. I remember that building... One of my ex-girlfriend's father worked there...
Small world ain't it ?

I don't wish to get too deeply involved in the ethics of it. Suffice it to say that with all these companies profit is everything which is why the anti viral aids drugs were not being licensed to those countries who needed them but couldn't afford them(predominantly African and Asian) and that is why they won't experiment on people... only animals.

I can see a point in the not too distant future where the poorest people in the poorest countries will be the guinea pigs.

Sad to say, I agree with you Firecat. They are already selling their own body parts in India so it's the obvious next step...
