Just one good thing...

Outline: Written as we were about to start on the debacle known as the last World Cup... altho' it's not really about football.
Why: for fun
Review: Any
JUST ONE GOOD THING...

There's football on the tele' and football on repeats
There's football when you're on the loo and football when you eat
There's football when you're out all night and football when you sleep
Football to make you happy and football to make you weep.
There's football when you meet the wife for shopping down the town
and there's football when, for sunday lunch, your relatives all come 'round.
There's football while you're making love and football in the bath,
football when you mow the lawn or you're just having a laugh.
There's football up in heaven and football everywhere...
and football up in Scotland... If they can call it that, up there ?
Football all around the world and football on the moon...
I think football's taking over if it hasn't already done ?

So while you're cheering our team on or kicking 'round that ruddy ball
please spare a thought for those of us who cannot stand football
Who think it's overrated... and played by prima-donnas
or not played... If it comes to that, by cheats like Drogba or Maradonna.
Who couldn't give a monkey's about footballers (Or their wives...)
and who actually seem to get out a bit and do something with their lives...
Whose attitude is 'Who cares ?' 'cause they can always rise above it
and who don't resort to verbal... or telling you where to shove it.
Where Rooney's metatarsal is not something that looks bleak
but the epithet you called the bloke when it was mentioned all last week
and where arguments go on all day but don't turn into rows
about who is good and who is not and who's a big girl's blouse ?
Yes... The World Cup's back on tele' and though you might find it a drag
be thankful that it's happening 'cause it gave the English back their flag.

Author Explanation: The thing that got to me was the flags. The English finally reclaimed it from the moronic tendancy and flew it with pride. I just wanted a hook to hang it on. For those who object to the inclusion of Didier Droghba's name within the cheating bit... He had recently admitted in the media to 'diving for penalties'. If the cap fits...

Hi Chris
Im trying to remember which manager said (something like)"Football isn't a matter of life or death, it's much more important than that". Just like this wonderful poem it made me laugh out loud at first and then made me immensely sad because there are some people that believe just that.

Thoroughly enjoyed the read thank you.

Hey Chris,

I dunno, it depends what ye like. I'm a big football fan myself, I enjoy it. Some don't, and fair dues. What I detest the most about football is the English national involvement though. The debacle of the last world cup indeed. Every time there's a big tournament they come out and say "oh, this is our year, we've got it", and they hype it up so much and they're so arrogant with it.

I'm Northern Irish, and have a season ticket for international matches. My wee country is always the underdog, and when we win we enjoy it, and we always get behind our team. From what I see, the English only have criticism.

I realise that I've done exactly what you didn't want, I've reacted by talking about football, lol. Apologies for that. Enjoyed the read though.

No objection to "Droghba" being mentioned. Is that a typo? Tis Drogba.

Tim

Thanx for the kind words to both Mum Peng. and Tim. I freely admit I know nothing about football (I'm a Man.City supporter so what does that tell you ?). Tim, Oooops, you're right on the spelling. I just wanted to celebrate the fact that we English seemed to have regained the use of OUR flag as opposed to that Union thing. Every other nationality seems to be able to fly theirs with pride and finally we got to...
Tim, I wrote one about the Ireland Spain game when the Spanish won on penalties. Irish John (ex landlord) of The Silver Moon in Hitchin where I used to perform, burst into tears and promptly 'blagged' a copy to send home... Must have done something right.
M.Peng. I can't remember who said it either, but as you point out so correctly, some people seem to believe it.

Hi Chris

I liked this very much; it sums up the situation nicely.

I agree that there are too many spoilt football stars and too much football in general.
I think all the fun's gone out of the sport and it's now just big business.
I no longer watch England play as it depresses me too much (the hype as well as the performance!).

Cheers

Phil

First things first:

BILL SHANKLY.

Secondly- for an anthem that puts the whole Soccer thing into perspectivie please see below.

Finally, I wonder if we are not all that way from Soccer being the latest "South Sea Bubble". Declining interest driving away the TV Juggernaut leading to falling player prices and then wages.

To think that some players will receive in a year what some of us would only achieve in several lifetimes.

To think that the yearly wages bill of the premiership could probably feed all of Africa for a couple of days is even more obscene...
Thanx to Brian for the answer to who said it, and P.G.K. for the review.
I actually like a good game of football. Trouble is, most of us rarely get to see a 'good' game these days. It should have skill, excitement, flair and at least a goal.
The second half of the recent Chelsea and Arsenal was a case in point. Ok, nobody scored in that half but it had everything else.
I can remember two games from my youth that tower above anything I've seen recently and they were Benfica vs Real Madrid (1962 European cup final) and Portugal vs North Korea from 1966 World cup. Those two matches epitomise to me what football should be all about. Not a bunch of overpaid olympic diving champions...

Nothing personal but I think I'll pass that one by. I'm usually getting ready for a gig... Hope that's a good enough reason ?
