Bah Humbug!

Outline: An exercise in humbuggery!
What’s that noise?
Oh! – bells, that means it’s Christmas.
Hell!
Let it pass quickly – that’s my prayer.
The end of the year is draped in tawdry tinsel –
The Spirit of Christmas past.
But it was never good.
The presents were never what was wanted,
The right people never there,
Hackneyed carols: Silent Night? Always too noisy!
Sherry, mince pies and stomach ache.
The tedium of aged relatives nodding off
(and soon that will be me!)
Enforced Monopoly with inevitable protracted defeat.
Food and more food
And films already worn out in the memory.
We are trapped in this tarnished tradition.

One Christmas night we jumped in virgin snow
After the midnight service.
That stays in my mind as a good one.

This year I shall buy 20 Ready Meals
And a bumper bottle of Bristol Cream
And sleep through till Boxing Day.

I'm with Carrieann. The one thing that I most miss is now that all my children are over 20 and in jobs I can no longer buy them the present that makes their eyes light up.

Xmas is for grandchildren and Grandparents, the melding of the two creates a magic of its own. Unfortunately my family now lacks both. The former yet to be born, the latter now deceased.

This year I shall buy 20 Ready Meals... but are 12 days of Christmas... so even two meals a day need 48 of them most of them would not feed a baby let alone an adult..

If you have a really bad singing voice can I suggest a spot of carol singing..might pay for those ready meals..

Hello anonymouse,

I am so happy to read that I am not alone in thinking materialism and commercialism has killed any joy for this supposedly (to some) sacred time of year.

If you'd like to make it 21 meals, I can bring Cluedo for a change...

Good little ranty-poohs.

Hi Anonyouse, it’s a shame that you had such miserable Christmases but one. Everyone knows what Christmas is really about, and remember that the three wise men brought gifts to Christ in the tradition of their day, and that is why we give gifts. It doesn’t matter what the gift is, it’s the though behind it. I think a small number of people get lazy when it comes to the festivities, and prevents them enjoying the season. How boring it would be without the celebrations throughout the year. So, I wish you a Merry Christmas. cheers, scarlet Smile

A very neat summation of the modern 'XMAS'!

Just a poem, folks! Not strictly autobiographical, you know, - just a few elements of discontent at what it's become. I shall of course be up there cooking Christmas dinner for my family, singing Christmas carols and playing on the floor with my grandson. Then probably falling asleep in front of the TV like an old biddy with a glass of festive cheer.
That reminds me, better go and get a tree!
