Who Am I? I Am Mathias Rust. Pleased To Meet You.

Outline: The beginning of the end.
Review: Any comment welcome.
Who Am I? I Am Mathias Rust. Pleased To Meet You.

No one knew what his mission was -
no one dared to dream that bold -
'cept him:
Rookie Pilot all of nineteen years of age
when Adage said, "It can't be done!"

Cessna 172 his craft
he left the NATO pilots in his wake
and flew where they dare not

at less than a hundred and thirty knots
thirty feet off the deck

and to heck with Russian Radar!

Landed in Red Square and . . .
beware all Russians now
you're not as safe
as the Generals said,

a lot of whom were binned that day
for the sin of being 'Lax' and
fighting Perestroika and Glasnost
as though secret periscope view
or chess bravado could see them through.

"Holy Cow! I was the beginning of the end
with fall of Berlin Wall just around the bend,"

he must have said a short while later.

Author Explanation: A follow-on from my 'Jimmy Angel' poem. Flyers understand stuff walkers have never dreamed about.

Well penned Ron.
What Matty achieved took balls... BIG BALLS!
Tomorrow, (hopefully/possibly/unfortuntely)... someone else will go against the grain?
I hope and pray they are as lucky.

Danny,

Glad you liked this, Cool it was fun to write, too.

......

B,

Yeah, I've had loads of fun and danger Wink but I guess he helped change the world. Spent nearly a year and a half in a Russian prison camp before they released him.

.........

Keith,

Aye lad, big balls, and yeah, some grains need going against - God be with Benazir Bhuto today. She's been placed under House Arrest.

Cheers, mates.

Cheers

Shocked Yeehaa Laughing I just stuck a reference to this poem on Wikipedia along with a link to our MW Homepage. I've never contributed to that library before. It was easy. Shocked Laughing Laughing Laughing

Cheers

.......

Hm . . . so much for 'easy' on Wikipedia - it's Saturday morning as I edit this post and Wikipedia have deleted the entry. Confused

Hey Ron,

Enjoyed this one, reading on from Jimmy Angel. Don't know much about this, so the poem intrigued me enough to google Mathias Rust - ye learn something new every day, huh? Interesting to read through the history and stuff. From what I see, I think the poem gets it across well too. Thanks for the read here, enjoyed.

Tim

(P.S - it's almost impossible to add to wikipedia without yer entry being deleted. A friend o' mine did it and the same happened to him, although admittedly that coulda been cos he was trying to pencil himself in as the fifth beatle, but still.)

Thanks, Tim, glad you liked this. Very Happy

Yeah, I learn something new every day too. Cool

From that Wikipedia link, above, check out the Danish TV interview with him on YouTube. Really cool.

Yesterday I wrote to the Hamburg Morgenpost and asked them if they would pass the poem onto Mathias, as I have no way at the moment of personally contacting him. I hope he gets it.

Cheers mate.

I remember with awe and drinking to his name when he did this. Good poem Ron.

Into the distance, a ribbon of black
Stretched to the point of no turning back
A flight of fancy on a windswept field
Standing alone my senses reeled
A fatal attraction holding me fast, how
Can I escape this irresistible grasp?

Wow, what a poetical crit - kudos, man. Cool OK

Yeah, awesome, hey. I like Keith's definition of him too - 'BIG BALLS!' - just an ordinary young bloke, with the bottle of Hercules. Click here for a great interview with him twenty years on. OK

Cheers
