Carbon Life

Outline: Think twice before you buy that 'Bargain'.
Review: Any comments welcome; political ones especially.
Carbon Life

Carbon atom everywhere.
In your blood and in your hair.
In the ground and in the air.
Making Life not laying bare.

Stardust atom's shimmering sheen
forms a planet warm and green
to hold a life of calm serene
that Man destroys by being mean.

Burning coal and felling trees
upsets a balanced life of ease
and causes Man to cough and sneeze
and die from painful skin disease.

CO2 and the Ozone Hole
may fry us all before we're old
and take away the winter cold
as global warming takes a hold.

A chemical soup in a prehistoric sea
created Man in infancy,
then evolution charged a fee
for placing us at the top of the tree.

But who will pay the price for life
when a cheating hand can bypass strife
and who will care when the last oak leaf
is consumed by a fire of false grief?

On Easter Island Man did learn
that without a forest there's no place to turn
and all that remained was to sit and yearn
for a beautiful world
deliberately burnt.

Hi Ron
This is a strongly written poem but I am puzzled by it.
Quote:
then evolution charged a fee
for placing us at the top of the tree.

I am not sure that we really are at the top of the evolutionary tree - leaving aside the fact that by its nature evolution is unlikely to have a top or a bottom because it is constant change.

Quote:
On Easter Island Man did learn
that without a forest there's no place to turn
and all that remained was to sit and yearn
for a beautiful world deliberately burnt.

I am off to look up details of Easter Island since my understanding was that it was a volcanic destruction not a man made one but hey, what do we penguins know?

Oh and in case you're wondering, I did like the poem.

Settled by seafaring Polynesians a thousand years ago, the only source of fuel on the island was the trees. Rather than replanting, they gradually used up all of their natural resource until there wasn't even enough wood left to build boats to go fishing or, in the end, to escape. What followed was war and cannibalism, according to the latest academic thinking. The statues are a tribal warning, a symbol of power, to the 'enemy' tribe.

The island itself was discovered one Easter Sunday, hence the name.

Glad you liked the poem, MP. Very Happy OK

Cheers

Cheers, Bernie Very Happy glad you liked this. OK

I normally write in blue, but with this one I was thinking that the heavy black could resemble the charred remains of a once-great forest and the darkness of the subject matter. Hmm . . . maybe I went too arty in my mind. Laughing

Thanks for dropping by again. Wink

Cheers

Long time no see.

I wish I could believe that man was powerful enough to save the planet but 30k years ago the ice caps which reached down to North London, melted and became smaller than they are today. Sea level rose 300ft and all in 50 years.

There are powers greater than ours.

Brian

I agree Wink

This 'could', as more than just you suggest, all be a Natural Cycle but the sceptics are in the minority. I for one don't want the world to think they can just take take take without consequences. As a History buff yourself, you will no doubt already know that decadence always comes with a heavy price. Wink

Will nip over to your piece soonest. Wink

Cheers
