Faithful Dentists
Poetry Author: Firecat
Created: 20 March 2005

Let us in!
We are the faithful dentists!
It's going to hurt!
But we can lessen the pain.

We have to widen the chinks and cavities,
Then pour in poisonous mercury ~
Yet we will stop infection
From crippling your heart.

Lignocaine
Delivered by sharp needle
Will calm your nerves
And numb you to the pain.

As for Faith,
I have walked the desert sands
With only one set of prints.
His, not mine.

When I had reached the other side
He took me from the church of the self-righteous
And stood me with the Sybils
Who cared for me,
Their prodigal daughter!

I take it that the dentists in question are Bible-bash... I mean, preachers of the word of God, FC? Laughing
Lignocaine's not in my Encyclopaedia Irlandia, but it sounds like good stuff. A great mix of dentistry and religion (I don't know which is the more painful). Laughing
And this is a lovely little nod to the classic religious poem 'Footprints':
As for Faith,
I have walked the desert sands
With only one set of prints.
His, not mine.

This poem is a really enjoyable read, FC.

Send your poems off to magazines, Maipen. Stop being so lazy, your poems are brilliant. I've finally realised that they don't come looking for you, you have to go looking for them. Laughing

I think that's Encyclopoedia Hibernicca, Sammy. These Latins. Lignocaine, Lidocaine, Xylocaine, Cocaine, pretty much the same thing... Shocked

Thanks, both. Laughing

My Pen, I agree, go get published! So far, I've only been published in The Beano! Wink

You were published in the Beano? You jammy git!
That was my lifetime ambition! I discovered literature through the Beano, it taught me to write.
Aww! That's two people on here tonight who have made me jealous - you and Paw, on the 'Success Stories' thread, who's having his work read out by Johnny Vegas on Five Live this weekend. Crying or Very sad
I give up. I think I'll just be an accountant, I can't compete. Shocked

Hi Cat, good piece as ever! With little undertones to challenge us. And just to annoy Sammy a bit more, I too, have been published and paid for it!! Several times too. Hahaha. x

interesting poem. it gave me whiplash! (the good kind) the language is pretty strong, except for "From crippling your heart" which kind of softened the blow of this poem (not in a good way) and is a bit cliched. for a poem of such spare, minimalist rhythm, it's the only misstep, in my opinion, while everything else is quite meticulous. the sudden shift in tone and theme in stanza 4 & 5 is humorous and beautiful, two things that are rarely joined successfully.

Thanks for reviewing this, Chris, a bit of a clumsy one this. I will look at it again in light of your comments.
They now reckon quite a few heart problems start with rotten teeth!

I have ambiguous feelings about this one. It would be horribly grandiose to use such a metaphor, but the way I feel about it minds me of the early collators of the Bible, who, I was taught, were unsure about whether the book of Revelations should be included or not. Confused

I remember reading this before on GW Cat and I thought it very thought provoking then. Still do. Well worth airing it again. x
